Of course, you need much better German language skills than B-1 for your studies in subject-specific areas. For example, you need the DSH examination with the overall result DSH-2 or DSH-3.

However, you can also prove this language level with other certificates and then start your studies in a subject-specific area directly. Then you are not required to take a DSH examination:

• German Abitur (certificate from a German school in Germany or abroad)
• Certificate of completion of a Studienkolleg [preparatory college] in Germany (鈥淔eststellungspr眉fung鈥� [assessment test])
• DSH certificate with grade DSH-2 or DSH-3 of a German university
• the 鈥淜leine deutsche Sprachdiplom鈥� (KDS) [Basic German Language Diploma] of the Goethe Institute
• the 鈥淕ro脽e deutsche Sprachdiplom鈥� (GDS)[Advanced German Language Diploma] of the Goethe Institute
• the 鈥淶entrale Oberstufenpr眉fung鈥� (ZOP) [Central Advanced Language Test] of the Goethe Institute
• the Unicert III certificate for the German language
• TestDaF certificate with at least TDN-4 in all parts
• Certificate Deutsches Sprachdiplom II (DSD II) der Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK)
