Panel discussion "The future of reconciliation / L'avenir de la r茅conciliation"
The reconciliation between Germany and France is considered exemplary in many respects. And indeed, the complete abandonment of the narrative of "hereditary enmity" and the turn towards equally close political, economic and, above all, social relations is an impressive achievement - evident not least in the activities of the many DFG/AFAs. However, the panel discussion does not want to stop at this positive summary. Firstly, it should be asked what the future of Franco-German reconciliation could look like: Where are there "blind spots"? What are the issues for future generations? Secondly, however, we also wanted to look at two other reconciliation processes: Firstly, the process between Germany and Poland is nowhere near as advanced as it is with our neighbors on the Rhine. At the same time, a new dynamic is perhaps possible following the change of government in Poland. What will the future bring here? Secondly, we wanted to look at the Middle East, an area of the world where reconciliation seems further away than ever following the attacks on October 7 and the war in the Gaza Strip. Is this impression correct? What possibilities are there "despite everything"? What are positive examples of reconciliation processes between Jews and Palestinians and what role can the Franco-German example play?
