Review: Lecture on possible ecocide in protected area in Bolivia at TU Darmstadt

Manuripi Protected Area

As part of the workshop "Ecocide as Political Violence" of the Trace Research Network, the Scientific Director of the Peace Academy, Prof. Dr. Janpeter Schilling, gave a lecture entitled "The Threat of Large-scale Gold Mining in the Manuripi Wildlife Reserve in northern Bolivia: Heading towards Ecocide?" on June 30, 2025. The term ecocide refers to unlawful or willful acts that are deliberately committed and are highly likely to result in significant, widespread or long-term damage to the environment. In his contribution, Schilling discussed the question of whether industrial gold mining in the Manuripi protected area in Bolivia would constitute ecocide. He came to the conclusion that, due to the extensive environmental destruction and pollution caused by mining, a central criterion for ecocide would be fulfilled, whereas it remained unclear whether mining in a protected area would violate applicable law. The other presentations at the workshop dealt with the historical development, legal aspects and other cases of ecocides.
