New issue of Friedens-Warte 1-2/2022: Social divisions and cohesion in crisis situations

The Peacekeeping Journal of International Peace and Organization. Turkish background

How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected social cohesion in different countries and regions of the world? This is the question addressed in the current issue of Friedens-Warte, edited by Charlotte Dany and Dennis Dijkzeul (Ruhr University Bochum). Contributions deal with the effects of the pandemic in the Amazon region, Brazil, Senegal, India and the USA, among others.

With the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the promises of salvation came thick and fast: Will this be the start of a new wave of solidarity? Will we manage, will (nation) states manage to overcome social divisions in favor of social justice? However, this initial euphoria soon fizzled out.

The articles in the current issue are therefore dedicated to the interplay between social cohesion and social divisions in times of crisis. On the one hand, with regard to the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. On the other hand, the focus is on the consequences for humanitarian aid and development cooperation, which have long been discussed here under the psychological concept of resilience.

The issue is edited by Charlotte Dany (Friedensakademie RLP, Landau) and Dennis Dijkzeul (IFHV, Bochum) and introduced thematically with an editorial. It contains contributions from authors with many years of experience in countries such as India, the USA, Brazil and Senegal, as well as the results of a BMBF-funded research project on resilience and international organizations. Peace Academy staff members Rebecca Froese and Janpeter Schilling are represented with their co-authored essay "Between Cooperation and Conflict: A Social-Ecological Perspective on the Impacts of COVID-19 in South-western Amazonia".
