The Rhineland-Palatinate Peace Academy and the Israeli educational and meeting center Givat Haviva have sealed their cooperation with a joint agreement. In future, the two institutions will carry out joint projects in the field of education and research. This international cooperation is intended to further expand and strengthen peace education and peace research activities in Rhineland-Palatinate and Israel.

During a visit to Israel, the partners have now defined the content of the cooperation. In addition to research, training and workshop activities, the agreement provides for exchanges and guest visits by lecturers and students. It will kick off with workshops for multipliers, a summer academy in Israel in 2018 and joint research projects on civil society peace work in border regions. "The cooperation agreement is also an expression of the international perception of the Peace Academy RLP," emphasizes Dr. Sascha Werthes, Managing Director of the Peace Academy. "The different areas in which the two institutions work promise a variety of impulses, especially in the development of new innovative peace education courses."

The cooperation agreement emerged from the joint declaration of intent concluded by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the state of Israel in March 2016 on the expansion and cooperation in the field of education. The cooperation between the Peace Academy and Givat Haviva began with the joint event "Towards a Shared Society" in Kaiserslautern in June 2016, followed in July 2017 by a guest visit to the University of Koblenz-Landau by Dr. Ran Kuttner from the University of Haifa and academic advisor to Givat Haviva. Yaniv Sagee, Givat Haviva Director, emphasizes: "We are looking forward to this promising academic collaboration. The fact that we are entering into such a cooperation agreement with an institution in Rhineland-Palatinate illustrates the close relationship between the state, its institutions and Givat Haviva, which we have been cultivating for almost 25 years now."

Givat Haviva is the oldest and largest Israeli educational and meeting center for Jewish-Arab understanding, which is actively committed to a just and sustainable democratic civil society. It was founded in 1949 and carries out projects in the fields of peace work and peace education, support for communal cooperation projects, art and women's and gender issues. Givat Haviva's work focuses on bringing together Jewish and Arab young people. In its flagship project "Shared Communities", Givat Haviva initiates and supports Jewish-Arab community partnerships in Israel. The aim of these partnerships is to strengthen the Jewish-Arab dialog at a political and civil society level and to put the relationship between the country's two largest population groups on a new and cooperative footing.
