Campus Landau active at the Democracy Days #2021HAMBACH1832

Landau University is involved in the Democracy Days #2021HAMBACH1832 with the Rhineland-Palatinate Peace Academy, the Human Rights Education Center at Department 6: Cultural and Social Sciences and the Rhetoric focus. Their common goal is to draw attention to the fact that democracy is not simply there as a matter of course, but is always being fought for. "The rise of right-wing populism has made this particularly clear to us in recent years," says Dr. Charlotte Dany, Managing Director of the Rhineland-Palatinate Peace Academy. Hambach Castle, which has been a symbol of German and European democracy and freedom since the Hambach Festival in 1832, has also been the scene of right-wing populist events. This prompted the Hambach Castle Foundation to put together a package of measures against right-wing populist events.

Something must be done to counter right-wing populist interpretations. "As many people as possible should therefore actively engage with democracy. The Democracy Days #2021HAMBACH1832 offer an excellent framework for this," emphasizes Dany. Together with her colleague Annalena Groppe, she is organizing two events: rhetoric training against right-wing slogans and a lecture on the ideological dispute within the AfD. On July 2, the Human Rights Education Unit at Department 6: Cultural and Social Sciences will host MEP Romeo Franz in the Audimax on campus, who will speak about 'Democracy needs participation' with regard to minorities. In cooperation with the Institute of English Studies (Prof. Dr. Frank Polzenhagen), there will be an opportunity to discuss questions of democracy and human rights against the background of Corona in an evening forum in the Audimax on 8 July. Discussion partners include Prof. Dr. Andreas Musolff from the University of East Anglia and Dr. Joachim G枚rgen, Head of the Trimedial News Department at SWR. "In this way, we want to make it clear from within the university that science can and must make an enlightening contribution to a living democracy," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Matthias Bahr, Academic Director of the Human Rights Education Unit. And Prof. Dr. Francesca Vidal, Head of the Rhetoric focus area, emphasizes: "Democracy is always also the necessary debate in speech and counter-speech, in which the power of the argument is tested and sharpened. Samples of this important democratic skill can be experienced on June 24 at the Gloria Cinema in Landau, when the student debating club competes against academics from the university. And the program starts on 16 June with an 'Online Day of Human Rights Education', which is dedicated to the human right to protection in the event of illness and takes a look at other regions of the world - a perspective that focuses on solidarity between nations.

All events at the university are committed to the common goal of strengthening democracy and democratic awareness and are realized within the framework of the nationwide alliance Democracy Wins and the association Kreativ f眉r Menschenrechte e.V., among others.

Further information on the events, which are updated depending on the corona situation, can be found at and for all events at
