To mark the 90th anniversary of Max Slevogt's death, Sofia Ohmer from New York University is curating the exhibition "War and Peace" in cooperation with the Rhineland-Palatinate Peace Academy, which is taking place at the Slevogthof in Leinsweiler and the Deutsches Tor in Landau. With the support of the Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz, young artists are exploring the motto of the Kultursommer "Ostwind" (East Wind) through painting, scenography, photography and film.

The exhibition takes place at two special historical locations in Rhineland-Palatinate that are currently only accessible to visitors to a limited extent: the Slevogthof in Leinsweiler and the Deutsches Tor in Landau. Both historical sites are currently being restored by Thorsten Holch (ARCHImedes). As part of the exhibition "#War and Peace", O.H.O (painting) and Sofia Samoylova (photography and film) provide deep insights into this complex and topical subject.

"Dealing with war and peace has been existential since the beginning of human history. The topic is currently of great concern to us in Europe, as the effects can be felt immediately," emphasizes curator Sofia Ohmer. Sofia Samoylova's photographs provide a synchronized view of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine in the here and now. She focuses on the consequences of the war on the individual and takes the viewer into personal life stories. In contrast, O.H.O's large-format pictures on the subject of war and peace open up a diachronic view through time, focusing on positive and negative actors in world history. In doing so, he shows the changeability of events through individual personalities, but at the same time also illuminates the repetitive mechanisms of war and peace. The Ukrainian singer Tetiana Chihocka and a staged reading by Isabel Ralser, Eugen Koskowezki & Daniela De Sabato (ZKW - Center for Cultural and Knowledge Dialogue at the University of Landau) provide an extended view of the exhibition's theme.

The pre-opening of the exhibition for school classes will take place at the Slevogthof, where the artists will breathe life into the architectural gem on the 90th anniversary of his death. Slevogt's experiences of war and peace are highlighted in the concept of the exhibition "War and Peace" as highly topical for our present day. In October 1914, Slevogt volunteered to go to the Western Front as a war painter. His initial enthusiasm for the war quickly faded. The physical and mental strain took its toll on him, so that he only lasted a few weeks at the front and retired to the Slevogthof.

The exhibition is open to the public from July 9 to 11 (5 to 9 p.m.) at the German Gate in Landau. On July 10, at 8 p.m., there will be a staged reading on Slevogt's war experiences by performing arts students from the University of Landau. Admission to all events is free. On July 11, at 7 pm, Ukrainian artist Tetiana Chihocka will be singing music from her country at the Deutsches Tor.

The German Gate is one of the few remaining parts of Landau Fortress. It was built from 1688 to 1692 according to the plans of the fortress builder Vauban. At the time of the fortress, the German Gate and the French Gate were the only access points to the town of Landau and the scene of all the events of war and peace. As part of the cultural summer, visitors have the opportunity to experience this special place.

To conclude the project, the premiere of the film "The new world since this morning" by Sofia Samoylova will take place at Universum Kino Landau on July 16 at 8 pm. The film tells the personal story of a young mother and her daughter from eastern Ukraine. They have since been able to flee to Germany. Admission is also free, but donations for the Ukrainian family are requested.
