Further training for advisors and core teams in the AGG complaints procedure on 29.05.2026 with the speaker Prof. Dr. Eva Kohler

At ֱ, very different people are involved in complaints procedures in accordance with Section 13 of the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG):

Core teams in different constellations, which become active whenever an official complaint is made: In the case of complaints from or against employees, the HR department and staff council are usually involved, as well as additional people from the department or departments. In the case of complaints from or against students, the student department and AStA or student councils and others are usually involved.

In addition, informal discussions can also take place at various points of contact at the university: from the staff council to managing directors, equal opportunities officers, liaison lecturers, student council alert teams, AStA and others. It is not always clear when a boundary is crossed between low-threshold advice and a complaint. The complaints office can therefore also be involved in these cases.

Legal requirements for protection against discrimination - General Equal Treatment Act and more

Keynote speeches on 20.5.26 Discrimination and mental health - 27.5.26 Bullying in the workplace - 10.6.26 Power relations in the workplace and health consequences

Discrimination has health and social consequences. Those affected sleep poorly, lack concentration, are less productive and are unbalanced in social contacts. The consequences are not only serious on an individual level, the working atmosphere and performance levels also suffer.

On three dates, the topics of discrimination, bullying and abuse of power will be addressed from a scientific and socio-political perspective:

Wednesday, 20.05.2026, 12:00-13:30 (online)
Discrimination and mental health
Speaker: Dr. Christine Emmer, psychologist at the University of Mannheim

Registration link: //uni-kl-de.zoom-x.de/meeting/register/ROwLYyPnROal8-JBaWYCKw

Dr. Christine Emmer works interdisciplinary at the interface of psychology and sociology and investigates the effects of social inequality and discrimination on mental and physical health in her research. In her lecture, she will give an overview of empirical research on the consequences of discrimination for mental health and health behavior, present scientific methods for investigating these effects and discuss the consequences for individual and collective health. She will also shed light on structural aspects of discrimination and point out possibilities for preventive and protective measures.

Wednesday, 27.05.2026 - 12:00-13:30 (online)
Bullying in the workplace - An attack on dignity and health: It's time to look - and act.
Speaker: Beate Müller-Gemmeke, Dipl. Sozialpädagogin FH, former member of the Bundestag (2009-2025), social and labor market politician

Registration link: //uni-kl-de.zoom-x.de/meeting/register/QLTZrL3gSpun9QLl3h0V_A

Bullying is not an individual fate or a marginal phenomenon, but a structural problem that affects millions of people. According to the bullying report, almost 7 percent of employees experience bullying - often over a period of weeks or months. For them, it means targeted exclusion and psychological violence in the workplace - with serious consequences for their health and working atmosphere. It results in high costs for companies and society - through sick days, early retirement and social isolation. Yet despite these figures, there is a lack of effective protection in Germany. The lecture shows that bullying is trivialized, individualized and ignored - both in politics and in the world of work.

Wednesday, 10.06.2026 - 12:00-13:30 (online)
Power relations in the workplace and health consequences - state of knowledge in occupational science and practical consequences
Speaker: Dr. Wolfgang Hien, occupational and health scientist

Registration link: //uni-kl-de.zoom-x.de/meeting/register/9GKF_lHzRtG9CJ1jbTI8Dw

Based on generally recognized occupational science models on the relationship between work stress and mental illness (Karasek/Theorell and Siegrist), workplace-related power constellations are presented which have been shown epidemiologically to have a pathogenic effect on working conditions. Selected studies on this are briefly presented. The risk assessment of mental workloads is fundamental to a preventive strategy. Its main features will be outlined and discussed using the example of pathogenic power relations.

TeamTime rewards ideas for streamlining administrative processes, promoting innovation and improving Wellbeing

Good ideas win!

With TeamTime at the university traditionally for for the university: Ideas for streamlining administrative processes, promoting innovation, improving the Wellbeing of members at ֱ.

Between February 2022 and December 2025, 18 suggestions for improvement were shortlisted for the award. These were evaluated by President Malte Drescher, Chancellor Stefan Lorenz and Staff Council Chair Beatrix Weber as well as the BGM team, represented by Cornelia Rövekamp. At the award ceremony on 10.2.26, 4 teams or individuals and their ideas were honored. Malte Drescher is delighted: "Here, in this room, the creative elite of the university comes together."

üǵ𲹰󾱳: Dr. Memar's team in the Department of International Affairs regularly conducts short exercise sessions. This promotes their health, and employees are directly involved with possible exercises or tips for body and health during preparation. The proposal was awarded the special prize for occupational health management (BGM), which was anchored in the TeamTime service agreement. "Adopt an idea like this in your team!" says Laura Lombardi, who accepts the prize on behalf of the team.

Picnic tables for wheelchair users: The team led by Dr. Dieckmann from Department 5 would like to make existing facilities on campus accessible to people with physical disabilities. Tables with a recess for wheelchair users are to supplement the CampusPlus offer of wooden houses, tables and chairs in Kaiserslautern and Landau. The team has already started implementation: The first prototype of a table was made with the support of Lebenshilfe e.V. and is currently undergoing further technical development.

Stroller parking spaces for the parking garage: Markus Weis from RHRZ saw a hazardous situation for caregivers pushing baby carriages from top to bottom through the parking garage. This was the starting point for his idea to install baby carriage parking spaces. The proposal was partially implemented and the first parking spaces have been marked out to minimize the risk of accidents.

Window contacts and intelligent heating control in WCsIn order to save energy costs, Tatjana Legler from the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering suggested using controllers already in use elsewhere that automatically switch off heating systems when windows are opened. The technology is already sophisticated and the next step is to use it at the university. For several years now, these conversion measures have been implemented step by step - with the sustainability goals at ֱ clearly in mind.

The search for good ideas continues

TeamTime is an ongoing quality competition to improve sustainability and job satisfaction at ֱ. Suggestions will continue to be accepted. As before the merger, annual awards will again be presented. Finding efficient solutions in administration and technology as well as health-promoting measures for the university - in everyday university life as well as for the big picture at the university, in Kaiserslautern and in Landau - that is the motto.

The focus is on four central aspects:

Work content: How do task variety, responsibility or autonomy affect the experience of satisfaction?

Organizational factors: How do corporate culture, values, structures and requirements affect job satisfaction?

Social factors: What role do team spirit, leadership and interpersonal relationships play?

Individual factors: Why do some people find the same job more fulfilling than others - and what does this mean for work?

In the discussion, we consider how these approaches interact and how job satisfaction can be actively shaped. Finally, participants will receive practical ideas for their everyday work.

What role do values play in academia - and why are they fundamental to motivation, commitment and satisfaction? The event "The Value of Work" will explain how value-oriented leadership and appreciation can contribute to a high level of job satisfaction.

The focus is on two central aspects:

Value-oriented personnel management: how can managers create clarity about shared values, provide orientation and convey meaning?

Appreciation as a factor influencing job satisfaction: What effect do recognition, respect and fair treatment have in everyday working life?

Participants will gain insight into scientific discussions and practical impulses to strengthen job satisfaction in everyday life through appreciation and value-oriented leadership.

How does loneliness arise -
and what options are there to counteract it? (online)

2.12.25 - 14:00-15:30
Registration link: //uni-kl-de.zoom-x.de/meeting/register/cpRzNNHKTsmsVyWjG3fhcw

Loneliness is one of the most pressing social issues of our time. But what exactly does the term actually mean - and is loneliness always negative? While many people experience voluntary periods of retreat as beneficial, involuntary and prolonged loneliness can become a serious burden. The event therefore approaches the topic with a basic clarification of terms: What distinguishes loneliness from social isolation, and what role do subjective perception and personal life situation play?

The next step is to present possible explanations: Which social, psychological and structural factors promote loneliness? Building on this, the event will focus on the consequences of loneliness. What risks arise for the individual - and what risks for us as a community? Finally, we will look at approaches and measures that can prevent or reduce loneliness. What does it take for people to experience social connectedness in the long term?

The event will address the topic of loneliness in order to show ways of strengthening social connectedness and personal life satisfaction - and thus also good citizenship at the university.

For the second time this year, we had a heatwave from August 11 to 15. The first heatwave was from 30.06. to 02.07.25.

1.7.25:
Level 1 - Warning of high heat load

2.7.25:
Level 2 - Warning of extreme heat stress

Advice and recommendations from Department 6.4 Occupational Health and Safety and the Human Resources Department:

→ Arrange your working hours flexibly and postpone your start of work to early in the morning in accordance with flexitime regulations.

→ Start outdoor work early in the morning and avoid working after 11.00 a.m. to minimize exposure to UV radiation and increased ozone levels. If possible, move the work to shaded areas. If this is not possible, necessary work may have to be postponed to a later time.

→ Ventilate early in the morning, as there is a significant rise in temperature from around 10 a.m. on warm summer days. If possible, ventilation controls should be set so that night-time cooling is possible.

→ Keep sun protection devices permanently closed after airing the room in the morning.

→ Use fans for cooling.

→ Make sure you have sufficient hydration by drinking regularly.

→ Switch off unnecessary devices to reduce the number of heat sources (e.g. printers, lighting, etc.).

→ Cool both wrists regularly with cold water.

→ Wear light and comfortable clothing and shoes that are permeable to air and moisture (this does not apply to protective clothing).

→ Prefer light food and avoid hearty meals.

→ If the temperatures in the work rooms permanently exceed 30°C, the university leadership recommends an "extended home office regulation", but this must be agreed with the supervisor. The prerequisite here is that cooler temperatures can be found at home office workplaces.

The "extended home office regulation" means that work can be moved to the home office in the afternoon, provided there are no official reasons to the contrary. This only applies to those colleagues who have an individual agreement to work from home. Colleagues who are unable to work from home for work-related reasons are advised to start work as early as possible (from 6 a.m.) and to take advantage of flexitime in the afternoon if necessary.

→ Employees with overtime can also use the hot period to reduce overtime, please also do this in consultation with your line manager.

Further information: /arbeiten-bei-sommerhitze

Dear colleagues,

How healthy is the ֱ? Thank you for taking part in the survey in such large numbers and helping us to get to the bottom of this question and improve your working conditions. We now have the results and would like to share them with you transparently and openly, as well as the next steps.

- You can find the general results HERE

- The BGM team is gradually contacting all departments, departments, staff units and central facilities, presenting the respective results and offering so-called focus groups.

- The specific results for your department will then be made available to you.

- The positive and negative results are discussed in the focus groups, as well as how to deal with them. We discuss together what was rated well in your area and should be further strengthened as a resource, and we also look in the group at which issues are perceived as stressful and should therefore be reduced or changed.

- We then continue to work on what has been discussed and communicate everything openly in the respective department. Further meetings will then follow.

We look forward to exchanging ideas with you,

This was the motto of the second MHFA (mental health first aid) training course for first responders to mental health crises, which took place on November 3 and 4, 2022. This time, the focus was increasingly on the participation of employees. In addition to students from the student councils, some members of the staff council, managers and the representative body for severely disabled persons/addiction counseling also took part. It is important to raise awareness not only among students, but also among employees. The aim is to reach and involve teaching and research, administration and students as a whole at the university in order to jointly maintain a healthier working and study environment in the long term.

16 mental health first aiders (MHFA) qualified

More and more students are reporting stressful situations, such as experiencing stress or exhaustion. This is confirmed by the results of the health report conducted every three years by ֱ University Kaiserslautern-Landau (ֱ). As the first point of contact for those seeking advice, ֱ has now had 12 students and 4 employees trained as first aiders for mental health. The qualification has been offered by the company "MHFA Ersthelfer" (Mental Health First Aid) since 2020. It is run by the Central Institute for Mental Health in Mannheim.

"The past four semesters of the pandemic with a lot of digital teaching and little personal contact have demanded a lot from students," explains Diana Neben from the CampusPlus team, responsible for student health management (SGM) at ֱ. "In the written surveys for the 2021 ֱ Health Report, significantly more participants stated that they were suffering from a high level of stress (+10.7%) or exhaustion (+3%) compared to 2018. A fifth of respondents experienced double stress as a result of the pandemic, for example due to caring for a relative or home schooling a (sibling) child. The report also documents an increase in complaints that can be attributed to depressive symptoms or symptoms of an anxiety disorder."

ֱ is using these findings to help students deal with stressful situations more effectively in future. "In discussions with the degree program managers in the departments, the idea came up that we wanted to offer more support in the area of mental health to those seeking help. This gave rise to the pilot project in cooperation with MHFA Ersthelfer." Occupational Health Management (OHM) has joined the project: "First of all, we want to support the course managers and other employees in the student advisory service with this challenge," explains Melina Hanyßek, OHM project coordinator. "Furthermore, from the perspective of the BGM, we have seen a sharp increase in mental stress and absences among the workforce since the pandemic." The number of mental illnesses such as depression and burnout, which has been rising in the population for years anyway, has come to a head, so a "mental health" working group has been set up at ֱ, which will also build bridges to future colleagues in Landau. "We have already welcomed a professor of psychology from Landau to the working group and are delighted that he took part in the first MHFA training course as a representative of this working group," adds Hanyßek.

The 16 first aiders trained in June are now sensitized to the topic of mental health and can assist people with mental health problems and refer them to professional contact points. Overall, the training improves knowledge about mental health, reduces stigmatizing behaviour and increases confidence in their own skills as helpers. A key component is training based on case studies so that participants learn how best to recognize the signs of a mental health problem and react sensitively to those affected.

A second round of training is already being planned at ֱ in order to involve even more employees. "We want this new first aid service to be available throughout the university in the long term," emphasize Neben and Hanyßek.

About MHFA First Aiders

MHFA Ersthelfer is the German version of the Australian Mental Health First Aid program. Since 2020, the company has been working in partnership with the Beisheim Foundation under the auspices of the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim to establish a Germany-wide network. Previously, MHFA First Aid was launched at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim with the support of Dietmar Hopp Stiftung GmbH.
