Workshop: Who are "the good guys" here? NGOs between improving the world and exercising power
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are committed to doing good: they are active in crisis areas, provide humanitarian aid and provide vital resources. This aid is urgently needed in the face of global crises, natural disasters and military conflicts. However, as spending on development policy and humanitarian aid grows, so does criticism of NGOs. The work is said to be non-transparent, inefficient and sometimes even counterproductive.
In fact, NGOs are subject to economic constraints. They compete for donations and are under competitive pressure. This market logic can have negative, unintended effects. One example of this is wars that are co-financed and prolonged by the resources of NGOs.
How can NGOs deal with the tension between economization and ethical objectives? What specific dilemmas do NGOs face in practice? And what approaches and strategies are there to counteract the dynamics and problems of increasing economization? Together with experts from science, business and education, we will discuss the ethical and economic foundations of humanitarian action.
Dr. Charlotte Dany will be one of the speakers at the workshop organized by the Junge Akademie and the Peace Academy Rhineland-Palatinate. The workshop is part of the "Economics & Ethics" certificate program of the Junge Akademie. This program aims to convey theories of Business Studies and Economics in the context of current social change processes in an application-oriented manner. All interested parties between the ages of 15 and 26 are invited to participate.
